NEWS ARCHIVE January 2, 2020 LOS ANGELES SENTINEL: When you hear the words, “Ms. Hazel’s House,” the first thought that comes to some people’s mind is, “here stands just another ordinary house.” Not so, instead, this house is filled with unequivocal blessings derived from exemplary deeds put forth by Ms. Lanita Hamilton. Every Christmas, Hamilton works diligently with L.A. Global Care to set into motion Ms. Hazel’s House annual giveaway. This year’s campaign, which was a toy drive, was held on December 19, at the facility. More than 60 single men and women attended and 100 families were present. Food, toys, clothing and school supplies were provided to homeless men, women and children. According to one attendee, “It was apparent that homeless individuals entered the giveaway with a sentiment of anticipation and exited totally gratified.” Click HERE for the full article. June 18, 2019 KABC-TV: More and more sidewalks in LA are becoming homes for the homeless. The tents and tarps and other assorted shelters continue to pop up despite Proposition HHH, the city's billion-dollar homeless bond. "I think people know how complicated this issue is," Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a recent appearance on Eyewitness Newsmakers. "From the beginning I said I want to take responsibility for this issue because I feel so deeply about it, but anyone who thinks it can be solved overnight, of course that's not what the fight over homelessness is about." The latest count shows homeless numbers in the city are up 16% over last year. Click HERE for the full article. June 4, 2019 USA TODAY: Despite spending millions on housing and one of the strongest economies in decades, the number of homeless people in the nation's most populous county showed a dramatic increase in a new official count released Tuesday. Los Angeles County's homeless count rose 12% to 58,936, a reversal from the previous year when the number dropped by 4%. Though voters approved two massive bond measures to build more units as thousands live on city streets in tents, cars or in the open, officials say higher rents and a tight housing market are forcing more into homelessness. "People are falling into homelessness at a faster clip," said Peter Lynn, executive director of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. Click HERE for the full article.
